Rome Metro C Extension: New Archaeological Stations at Chiesa Nuova and Piazza Pia
Construction has commenced on the T2 section of Rome's Metro C line, which will introduce four new stations: Chiesa Nuova, Piazza Pia, Ottaviano, and Mazzini. The T1 section, featuring Auditorium and Farnesina stations, is slated to begin by July 2026. This extension, which stretches 7 km beyond Piazza Venezia, will cost over €3 billion and include a total of 31 stations. While completion is anticipated by 2037, the target year is 2036. Notably, Chiesa Nuova and Piazza Pia stations will be archaeological sites, requiring the excavation of 165,000 cubic meters. Piazza Pia will offer views of St. Peter's Basilica and Castel Sant'Angelo, while Mazzini will consist of five underground levels. The Piazza Venezia station, with a budget of €700 million, has been under construction since 2023 and is expected to finish between 2035 and 2036.
