Rome bids for Expo 2030 with Carlo Ratti's Tor Vergata masterplan

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

Rome has officially launched its bid to host Expo 2030, unveiling the project at the Italian Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai. Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, flanked by councillors Monica Lucarelli and Alessandro Onorato, presented the candidacy alongside Giampiero Massolo (president of the Expo Roma 2030 Promotional Committee) and Paolo Glisenti (Italy's commissioner for Expo 2020 Dubai). Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio and Infrastructure Minister Enrico Giovannini participated remotely due to the Ukraine crisis. The bid centers on a 210-hectare site in Tor Vergata, designed by architect Carlo Ratti, who also designed the Italian Pavilion in Dubai. The project aims to transform the suburban area into a collaborative urban laboratory, reusing Santiago Calatrava's 'Vele' structures and enhancing archaeological finds. Gualtieri emphasized Rome's 3,000-year history as a foundation for innovation, green regeneration (including planting over a billion trees), and improved access to archaeological sites. The slogan 'The future is our history' was highlighted. The logo, inspired by the Arch of Constantine, was released as an NFT. The Bureau International des Expositions will decide on the host city by late 2023.
