Rome 2024 Olympic bid failure leaves architectural projects in limbo
Rome's unsuccessful attempt to host the 2024 Olympics has resulted in numerous architectural and infrastructure projects lacking funding. According to the CONI dossier, 46% of the proposed venues (17 sites) are already in place, while 35% (13 structures) would require new construction, and 19% (7 locations) necessitate major renovations. Notable venues impacted include the Stadio Olimpico (built in 1938, last updated in 2009), the Stadio Flaminio (which has been unused since 2012), and the Palazzetto dello Sport (which underwent emergency repairs in 2019). The incomplete 'Double Sail' aquatic center, initially projected to cost €60 million, now has an estimated cost of €300 million. Other venues include the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club and Tre Fontane stadium (renovated from 2013 to 2022). Concerns arise that peripheral facilities may fall into disrepair, jeopardizing future initiatives and available resources.
