Romanian Pavilion from 2009 Venice Biennale restaged at Renaissance Society in Chicago

exhibition · 2026-04-19

From May 2 to June 27, 2010, the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago showcased 'The Seductiveness of the Interval,' a reimagining of Romania's pavilion from the 2009 Venice Biennale. Curated by Alina Serban in collaboration with the Romanian Cultural Institute, the exhibition included works by Stefan Constantinescu, Andrea Faciu, Ciprian Muresan, and studioBASAR. The pavilion, designed to resemble a shipping container, was relocated to Chicago. Visitors experienced a maze of rooms, beginning with an empty waiting area. Featured pieces encompassed Constantinescu's films, Muresan's 'Auto-da-Fé' and 'Dog Luv,' along with Faciu's 'EXUBERANTIA suspended.' The exhibition examined the historical context of art events, emphasizing Romania's democratic transition and the contrast of light and shadow.
