Roman temple discovered in Sarsina, but news suppressed

During excavations for a Conad supermarket and sports center in Sarsina (Forlì-Cesena province, Emilia-Romagna), the remains of a monumental Roman public building have been uncovered. The structure, partially exposed, features marble-clad walls, squared sandstone blocks, and later additions, and is believed to be the Capitolium—the main Roman temple dedicated to the Capitoline Triad (Jupiter, Juno, Minerva), built only in cities with colonial status. The ruins face the ancient Forum, confirming its religious function, following models from Pompeii, Ostia, Verona, and Brescia. Excavations are ongoing; the temple front, including the staircase and marble paving, may still be preserved. Sauro Turroni (Europa Verde) and Luana Zanella (Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra) have denounced the lack of media coverage. Zanella filed a parliamentary question to Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano, stating the find is unparalleled in northern Italy and that the municipality and Conad have minimized its significance. She questioned the compatibility of building a supermarket and gym on the site and urged valorization of the Capitolium for Sarsina's Roman and Umbrian heritage. Currently, the commercial project remains unchanged; after excavations, the temple will be covered by concrete, with only a 3D graphic restitution planned. The controversy highlights the tension between commercial development and archaeological preservation.
