Roman Signer's First Italian Museum Retrospective at MAN Nuoro
The MAN museum in Nuoro hosts Roman Signer's first solo exhibition in an Italian museum, curated by Lorenzo Giusti and Li Zhenhua. The show presents two core bodies of work: an environmental installation of 205 Super 8 films shot between 1975 and 1989, and five new sculptural and video works. Three new sculptures include two site-specific pieces: a vertical system of black umbrellas connected by handles rising up the staircase, a walkable wooden sculpture titled 'Installazione (2016)' that occupies an entire room, and 'Occhiali (2016)', an installation with a Super 8 projector and sunglasses on a table that casts a shadow on the wall. The Super 8 films represent the artist's complete film output, emphasizing materiality, temporality, and perception. Two new videos were shot on Sardinian beaches at Osalla/Orosei and Cala Liberotto. A book titled 'Un passo verso il mare' published by Humboldt Books accompanies the exhibition, featuring sketches, travel photographs, and a DVD with actions in Italy and an unpublished travel film that deconstructs the Grand Tour aesthetic. The exhibition runs until July 3, 2016.
