Roman Ondák's First French Institutional Solo Show at CAC Brétigny
Roman Ondák's first solo exhibition in a French institution, 'It will All Turnout Right in the End', opens at the Centre d'art contemporain (CAC) de Brétigny-sur-Orge from 30 September to 16 December 2006. The Slovak artist is known for orchestrating situations that explore territory, identity, and otherness through immaterial and performative works. His practice often involves institutional critique, using museum employees as performers, as seen in 'Silence, Please' (2004) at Stedelijk Museum, where guards wear vintage uniforms, or 'Another Day' (2003), where a ticket seller is relocated into the gallery space. Other works include 'Teaching to Walk' (2002), a mother teaching her child to walk daily in a gallery, and 'Good Feelings in Good Times' (2003), a fake queue of 9-12 people at an open door. Ondák's background under communism influences his interest in decontextualizing everyday situations to generate new meanings. 'Awaiting Enacted' (2004) replaces images in a Slovak newspaper with queue photographs. He also creates complex drawing networks, from preliminary sketches to performance documentation. The exhibition culminates a year-long project 'One Year Out of Hundred' (2005-2006), where each new show added a work. Past performances include 'Resistance' (2006), where participants kept shoelaces untied. Ondák's work has been shown at Kunstverein Cologne, CCA Kitakyushu, and Frieze Projects London.
