Roman Artists Stage Rival Quadriennale on Aurelian Walls

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Nineteen artists based in Rome have launched an outdoor exhibition called "Insieme, Insieme, Insieme," challenging the official Quadriennale. This event is taking place on the Aurelian Walls from October 21 to November 30, 2020. Gianni Politi, a painter who took on the role of curator during the COVID-19 lockdown, leads the initiative, which features artists like Maurizio Altieri, José Angelino, Micol Assaël (also participating in the Quadriennale), and others. The exhibition, described by image coordinator Matteo d'Aloja as an "invisible theatrical machine," is unprotected from the weather. This effort mirrors the Salon des Refusés, protesting the limited representation of local artists in the official Quadriennale. Politi highlighted Rome's cultural isolation, exacerbated by the pandemic, and aims to revive the city's artistic spirit. The project is backed by the Sovrintendenza and the Macro museum.
