Romaeuropa Festival 2022 Opens with Three Dance Reflections Performances

festival-fair · 2026-04-27

The 37th edition of the Romaeuropa Festival, running from September 8 to November 20, 2022, opens with three dance performances supported by Van Cleef & Arpels' Dance Reflections initiative. On September 13, Anna Teresa De Keersmaeker presents a restaging of her 1998 work "Drumming" at the Auditorium Parco della Musica's Cavea, set to Steve Reich's minimalist percussion composition. On September 17-18, Sasha Waltz & Guests perform "In C" at the same venue, a piece based on Terry Riley's 1964 composition, developed during the pandemic with a flexible structure allowing dancers to learn and reinvent choreography autonomously. From September 23-25, French choreographer Noé Soulier presents "Passages," a site-specific performance at the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici, exploring relationships between dancers' movements and the palace's architecture. Dance Reflections was launched by Van Cleef & Arpels in 2020, following the 2015 establishment of the Fedora-Van Cleef & Arpels Prize for Ballet. The initiative supports artists and institutions in producing new works and maintaining repertoire, as well as organizing choreographic events with international festivals. The festival's association with Van Cleef & Arpels echoes the house's historical connection to ballet, notably through George Balanchine's 1967 "Jewels," inspired by Claude Arpels' gems, and Benjamin Millepied's 2012 "Gems" trilogy.
