Roma Through the Eyes of Resident Artists at Palazzo delle Esposizioni

Palazzo delle Esposizioni presents 'Roma, a portrait', an exhibition exploring the Eternal City through the lens of historical and contemporary resident artists. The show traces Rome's enduring appeal as a destination for the Grand Tour, a tradition that began in the 18th century alongside Venice and Florence. This fascination led to the founding of the Académie de France in 1666 by French Finance Minister Jean Baptiste Colbert and sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini, hosting winners of the Prix de Rome. In the 19th century, this model inspired foreign cultural institutes, some of which settled in Rome after the 1911 Universal Exposition. The exhibition unfolds through paintings, installations, photographs, and projections created en plein air, reflecting the experiences of artists who have lived in the city. Featured artists include Elvira Amor, Yasmina Benabderramane, Giacomo Balla, Jean Baptiste Camille Corot, Sophie Jung, Konstantin von Kügelgen, Jochen Lempert, Benoît Maire, Ana Mendieta, and Ester Partegàs, among others. The show offers a multifaceted portrait of Rome, revealing how its landscapes have been reinterpreted across media and eras.
