Roma's Ex Mercati Generali urban regeneration project moves forward after 20 years
After more than twenty years of setbacks, the revitalization of Rome's former Mercati Generali in the Ostiense area is making headway. Spanning 9 hectares, this site is set to evolve into a multifunctional 'urban citadel' featuring public amenities, cultural spaces, sports facilities, green areas, and a student residence with 2,000 beds, supported by a €380 million investment from Hines. Public consultations commenced on January 30, 2026, with meetings scheduled for February 13. The project’s intricate timeline includes a 2004 competition won by OMA, a concession in 2006, variant approval in 2017, and a 2022 ANAC investigation. Construction is anticipated to start in Q1 2027, aiming for completion by summer 2030. A protest march titled 'Ex Mercati Generali Liberi' is set for February 28, 2026.
