Rolf Sachs's playful everyday objects take over Kunsthalle Schweinfurt

exhibition · 2026-04-26

The Kunsthalle Schweinfurt in Bavaria is hosting 'Be-rühren', a solo exhibition by Swiss multidisciplinary artist Rolf Sachs (born 1955 in Lausanne). The title, which translates to 'touch-move', carries both physical and emotional connotations. The show spans three decades of Sachs's practice and features over 150 works, including sensory sculptures, installations, and two-dimensional pieces. Highlights include 'Ausfahrt' (2004), a reinterpretation of road signs; 'Camera in motion' (2013), conceptual photographs of portraits and trees; colorful legless wooden chairs 'Horgen Glarus'; 'Dirty Thoughts 2' (2009) in smeared Kevlar; felt chairs 'Koln Tailor Made, option 3' (2008); tactile paintings like 'Heu' (2023) with hay; and 'Character Assemblage' (2025), an assembly of small painted boards. The exhibition is curated by Coralie Malissard with support from the Schweinfurt Cultural Foundation, the District of Lower Franconia, and the Schweinfurt Municipal Savings Bank. A comprehensive monograph published by DISTANZ Verlag, edited by Malissard and Salvatore Lacagnina with critical contributions, accompanies the show. Sachs's work reimagines everyday objects with irony and beauty, cutting chairs, duplicating beds, and transforming watering cans, jugs, and milk cans into lamps. Notable pieces include 'Aladdin' (2004), a lamp with a light bulb, and 'Rita Wig Light' (2004), a lamp covered with a wig reminiscent of Rita Hayworth's hair. The exhibition runs until October 5.
