Rolf Sachs: Moving Stills at Sotheby's London

Sotheby's London presents Rolf Sachs: Moving Stills, a solo exhibition curated by the artist himself, blending historical sculptures with new photographs. Sachs, born in Lausanne in 1955, draws from Minimalism and Surrealism, using humor to provoke sensory emotions and reframe ordinary objects. The show features assemblages of everyday items like chairs, sleds, milk cans, walking sticks, spades, and toilet paper rolls, combined with ancestral materials (stone, wood) or cast in bronze and resin. The photographic series Moving Stills introduces an unreal quality, playing with antithetical concepts and titles, creating harmonic antinomies—for instance, a toilet paper roll morphs into unsettling triangles, inverting the still life genre (Tenderly 7, L1010382-Enhanced-NR). Chance and coincidence are central; camera light and motion produce unplanned visual effects. Sachs, deeply tied to the Alpine culture of Engadine, lives between Rome and St. Moritz, steps from the Dracula Club where he serves as President. This marks his first London exhibition at Sotheby's New Bond Street, running concurrently with St. Moritz Pop Up! in London (until November 5), which brings a selection of designers connected to the Engadine capital.
