Roku's AI Creator TV: A New Low in AI-Generated Entertainment

Roku has launched AI Creator TV, a new 24/7 channel on its streaming service that exclusively features AI-generated films and shows, including commercials with 'synthetic performers.' The channel, available at No. 300 on the Roku Channel's Live TV Guide, is part of Roku's FAST (free ad-supported streaming television) lineup. Content is provided by Fairground, a year-old studio that distributes works from AI creators who have signed with studios or entered Fairground's competitions. Fairground CEO Colin Petrie-Norris has stated the channel aims to showcase 'over 100 of the best AI filmmakers from around the world' and promises 'high-quality entertainment' that has been overlooked by 'gatekeepers.' However, a review of the channel's offerings reveals low-quality content, including robotic narration, disconcerting animation, and poorly executed 'documentaries.' Many selections are reimaginings of public domain characters, such as 'Dracula Meets the Walkers,' 'Pinok IO,' and 'Alyce: Sound of Wonderland.' The channel also features series like 'True Crime Stories: Wild West' and 'The Best of AI: Animation.' Critics argue that the channel lacks taste and understanding of art, contrasting with notable artists who have embraced new technologies. Despite some interest from figures like Martin Scorsese and Natasha Lyonne in AI's cinematic possibilities, the channel's output is seen as a failure. The channel launched earlier this month on Roku and other FAST providers.
