RojoNegro Collective to Present Ritual Installation at Mexico Pavilion, Venice Biennale 2026
The Mexico Pavilion at the 61st Venice Biennale will feature "Actos invisibles para sostener el universo," a project by the RojoNegro collective, comprising María Sosa (b. 1985, Michoacán) and Noé Martínez (b. 1986, Michoacán), curated by Jessica Berlanga Taylor. The installation integrates organic materials, sound, video, and performance to create a space that "convenes" invisible entities, memories, and energies. RojoNegro's work adopts a decolonial perspective, treating Indigenous and Afro-descendant cosmogonies as living knowledge systems. The collective's name references cardinal directions and the sacred colors of Central America, as well as the ink of pre-Hispanic codices that preserved the "rule of life"—the balance between humans and the cosmos. The project interrogates fractures caused by colonization, from epistemicide to persistent inequalities, while reactivating alternative modes of existence. The body serves as a central intersection of cultures, histories, and geographies. Organic materials, destined to transform over time, symbolize instability, vulnerability, and memory. Sound and video elements incorporate voices and presences not always visible, expanding the visitor's perceptual field. The pavilion is conceived as an activation space where ritual practices and situated knowledge engage with the global context of the Biennale.
