Rochelle Goldberg's First Italian Solo Show at GAMeC
Rochelle Goldberg's first Italian solo exhibition, 'No Where, Now Here,' opened at GAMeC in Bergamo, running until January 15, 2017. Curated by Stefano Raimondi and Sara Fumagalli, the show features a large brown carpet covering the entire floor as a monochromatic landscape, alongside new sculptures and a wall-drawing. The title work expands on Goldberg's piece from the 'Mirror Cells' group show at the Whitney Museum. The exhibition follows presentations by Cory Arcangel, Ryan McGinley, and Rashid Johnson, and precedes a Pamela Rosenkranz show in May 2017. Goldberg's ceramics, often glazed and imprinted with synthetic snake skin, explore collapsing forms that blur distinctions between predator and prey, inside and outside. The installation includes a carpet sponsored by Gruppo Radici and iron structures by local company Rebuzzi. Raimondi first visited Goldberg's studio in Brooklyn's Navy Yard on November 3, 2015, and initially envisioned the show in a 14th-century cistern before securing GAMeC. The exhibition also features a monographic catalog. Fumagalli notes that Goldberg's female masks, inspired by Bellini's Madonna del Prato, convey unease rather than maternal tenderness, referencing Medusa.
