Roche Bobois and ArtReview Auction Mah Jong Sofa Artworks for Charity
ArtReview collaborated with the furniture company Roche Bobois to task eight artists with reimagining seating elements from the renowned Mah Jong sofa system, created by Hans Hoper in 1971. These innovative pieces were displayed at Roche Bobois in Chelsea, London, from April 5 to April 10, 2016, and later auctioned on April 21 at The Great Hall at St Bartholomew’s, London. Funds raised from the auction benefited Vital Arts, which provides art initiatives for Barts Health NHS Trust, along with Gasworks gallery and studios. The project was accompanied by a catalogue that was included with the April 2016 edition of ArtReview.
