Roberto Piloni's 'Aggetto Continuo' at Blocco 13 in Rome
Blocco 13, an independent exhibition space in Rome's Garbatella district founded by journalist Carlo Alberto Bucci and thirteen artists, reopens its season with a solo show by Roberto Piloni. Titled 'Aggetto Continuo', the exhibition runs until March 30, 2022, as part of the Focus section. Piloni, born in Rome in 1966 and a professor of Graphic Art at the Accademia di Belle Arti, transforms engraving marks into three-dimensional forms. He recovers natural elements and forces them into his own mental and spatial order. The three works on display—'Ispido', 'Luminarie', and 'Assembramento piccolo piccolo'—appear to project from the walls with strong dynamism, turning painting into sculpture. Using found objects in a bricoleur fashion, they mimic assembly instruction manuals and create new architectures. Light and shadow play completes the experience, leaving the viewer to close the circle. Curator Carlo Alberto Bucci writes that Piloni 'makes a square' around the small, essential things of his world, approaching Minimalism and Arte Povera in a synthetic and playful way, reinventing them through crooked sticks, plastic residues, and folded cardboard. Unlike previous works, no display cases contain lines or objects; volumes expand freely into space, and it is up to the viewer's eye to reweave the imaginary lines of the cardo and decumanus.
