Roberto Paci Dalò's Sound Art Podcast on Hannah Arendt

digital · 2026-04-27

Artist Roberto Paci Dalò has released 'HA', a nearly one-hour sound art podcast dedicated to political theorist Hannah Arendt. The work uses Arendt's voice—isolated words, phrases, and fragments in German—combined with digital sounds, clarinet, accordion, and field recordings. Dalò began the project in 2018 after being invited by Adriaan Eeckels to collaborate with the JRC Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, where he met philosopher Nicole Dewandre, who introduced him to Arendt's thought. The podcast is structured in three sections mirroring Arendt's concepts of Labor, Work, and Action, moving from abstract to lyrical. It includes a soundscape recorded at the Western Wall in Jerusalem on January 27, 2019. The work exists in multiple formats: a radio piece produced by ORF Kunstradio, an interactive audio-video installation produced by Trieste Contemporanea, and forthcoming performance, book, CD, and limited edition multiple. Dalò also announced the January 30, 2021 launch of Usmaradio, a research center for radio at the University of the Republic of San Marino, which draws on his three decades of sound art practice.
