Roberto Lacarbonara's 'Passages / Paysages' Proposes 'Scapeness' Concept

Roberto Lacarbonara's new book 'Passages / Paysages' (Mimesis, Milan 2020) introduces the concept of 'scapeness' to describe a paralyzing immersion in images that replaces direct experience of the world. The essay draws on Walter Benjamin's legacy, moving through photography (Luigi Ghirri, Giovanni Anselmo), cinema (Bong Joon-ho, Pier Paolo Pasolini), and video art (Ugo La Pietra, Alterazioni Video). Lacarbonara argues that contemporary perception of landscape is shaped by ever-new media, making visual exercise constructive.
