Robert Wilson on Peter Pan and the Berliner Ensemble

exhibition · 2026-04-24

Robert Wilson returns to the Festival d'Automne for its 42nd edition with a production of Peter Pan at the Berliner Ensemble, a surprising choice for the Brechtian company. In an interview with Denise Wendel-Poray, Wilson explains how Peter Pan fits into his history with the Berliner Ensemble, which began with Der Ozenflug and continued through Büchner's trilogy and The Threepenny Opera. He discusses his collaboration with experimental folk duo CocoRosie, who replaced Antony & The Johnsons after Antony became unavailable. CocoRosie created a visual book with character designs, and Wilson integrated their ideas into his process, which always starts with lighting design. Wilson sees Peter Pan as a complex story beyond the Disney version, exploring the child within adults, a theme he connects to characters like King Lear, Medea, and Salomé. The production is part of a broader program at the Louvre, including exhibitions, performances, and film screenings, alongside Wilson's The Old Woman with Mikhail Baryshnikov and Willem Dafoe, and a revival of Einstein on the Beach.
