Robert Smithson's 1969 Land Art action revisited in Rome

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The exhibition "Con gli occhi della Terra" at Galleria Colli Independent in Rome reunites two artists of different generations and a photographer: Robert Smithson, Markus Karstiess, and Claudio Abate. It revisits a little-remembered 1969 Land Art action, Smithson's first Asphalt Rundown, performed in an abandoned quarry near Rome. The event was orchestrated by Fabio Sargentini of Galleria L'Attico and documented by photographer Claudio Abate. The show presents documentation of the action, accompanied by a publication from a+mbookstore edizioni consisting of four booklets. Also on view is a video work by German artist Markus Karstiess, who was not yet born at the time of the Roman action; he has since excavated the asphalt remains, creating sculptures.
