The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation has put the artist's former studio and residence at 381 Lafayette Street, Manhattan, on the market following the sale of his estate in Captiva, Florida. Rauschenberg acquired the five-story structure in 1965 for $65,000, which once served as a convent and orphanage. The foundation indicated that plans for a nearby 19-story residential tower prompted the decision to sell, as it threatens the building's integrity. Rauschenberg spent $15,000 to transform the chapel into his studio, where notable artists like Mel Bochner and Dorothea Rockburne worked. After Rauschenberg's passing in 2008, the building became the foundation's headquarters. The Captiva estate sold for $45 million, raising local concerns, while the asking price for the Lafayette property remains undisclosed.
