Robert Mondavi Winery's Napa Valley campus reimagined by Aidlin Darling Design

The Robert Mondavi Winery in Napa Valley's To Kalon Vineyard has undergone a dramatic reimagining by San Francisco–based Aidlin Darling Design. Founded in 1966, the winery's original mission was cultural as well as oenological, with its iconic tower and arch designed by Cliff May. Over time, the campus became ad hoc and inward-looking, prompting a renovation that preserves legacy while modernizing production and visitor experience. The 216,000 sq ft project strips back decades of accretions, restores the arch and tower, and adds a new south wing with a canopy-like roof for hospitality. An inverted gable roof collects water and echoes the Mayacamas Mountains. Materials include concrete with earthen character and salvaged wood from oak tank staves. Sustainability focuses on water stewardship, with advanced wastewater treatment and reuse systems. Landscape design by Roderick Wyllie of Surfacedesign, Inc. integrates native plantings and a bioswale for runoff. The project aims to blur boundaries between architecture and land, reconnecting guests with the vineyard.
