Robert Mondavi Winery Reopens After Three-Year Architectural Transformation by Aidlin Darling Design

architecture-design · 2026-04-19

After a significant transformation spanning three years and covering 215,000 square feet, the Robert Mondavi Winery in Napa Valley has reopened in celebration of its 60th anniversary. Aidlin Darling Design led the renovation, which revitalized the original 1966 design by architect Clifford May and improved the connection to the To Kalon vineyard. Architect David Darling remarked that the previous design felt "heavy on heavy and introverted." Notable additions include a revamped visitor center, a restored reception area, an open-air veranda, and private tasting rooms linked to the winemaking process. Additionally, the project incorporates water management systems for collection and reuse. A central amphitheater pays homage to the winery's summer concert series, initiated in 1969 by Margrit Mondavi.
