Robert Mapplethorpe retrospective at Galleria Franco Noero in Turin

Galleria Franco Noero in Turin presents a retrospective of Robert Mapplethorpe, featuring around one hundred photographs spanning his entire career. The exhibition, described as 'almost museum-like' but lacking critical apparatus, is the gallery's second dedicated to the artist. Mapplethorpe, who died of AIDS in 1989, is known for his classicist yet provocative images of bodies, flowers, and sadomasochistic scenes. The show includes iconic works such as portraits of Lisa Lyon (1981) and Amanda Lear (1976), as well as self-portraits and still lifes. The display is non-chronological, emphasizing Mapplethorpe's exploration of corporeality, decadence, and the tension between classical beauty and impending decay. The exhibition is organized in collaboration with The Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation.
