Robert Heinecken's MoMA Retrospective Reveals Media Critique Through Photograms and Videograms

exhibition · 2026-04-22

From March 15 to September 7, 2014, the Museum of Modern Art in New York hosted "Robert Heinecken: Object Matter," a retrospective curated by Eva Respini. This exhibition highlighted Heinecken's examination of the contradictions within advertising, earning him the title of "para-photographer." His series "Are You Rea," created between 1964 and 1968, featured layered photograms that critiqued themes of sexuality and consumerism. Earlier pieces, such as "Transitional Figure Sculpture" (1965), integrated photographs into geometric designs. His later works, including "Periodical #5" (1971) and "150 Years of Photojournalism" (1989-90), deconstructed advertising narratives. Heinecken also ventured into video, producing "Inaugural Excerpt Videograms" (1981). The exhibition later moved to the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, emphasizing his critique of a culture saturated with images.
