Robert Capa Retrospective at Museo Civico di Bassano
The Museo Civico di Bassano del Grappa presents "Robert Capa. Retrospective" in September 2017, coinciding with the 70th anniversary of Magnum Photos and the Bassano Fotografia 2017 biennial festival. The exhibition features 97 black-and-white photographs spanning Capa's coverage of major 20th-century conflicts: the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), Chinese resistance to Japanese invasion (1938), World War II (1941–1945), the first Arab-Israeli war (1948), and the French war in Indochina (1954), where Capa died after stepping on a landmine. Also included are portraits of friends and artists such as Picasso, Ingrid Bergman, Hemingway, Faulkner, and Matisse. Highlights include the "Magnificent Eleven"—the only professional photographs of the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944. Capa co-founded Magnum Photos in 1947 with Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger, David "Chim" Seymour, and William Vandivert.
