Robert Breer's First Italian Retrospective Opens at Fondazione Antonio Dalle Nogare in Bolzano

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Fondazione Antonio Dalle Nogare in Bolzano hosts 'Robert Breer – Time Out', the first Italian solo exhibition dedicated to the American avant-garde artist (1926–2011). Curated by Vincenzo de Bellis and Micola Brambilla, the show features over 70 works across 400 square meters, including paintings, preparatory sketches, flipbooks, Mutoscopes, films, documents, catalogs, photographs, and his iconic motorized 'floats' made from plaster, fiberglass, sponge, and plastic. The exhibition explores Breer's engagement with time, matter, and movement, from his early 1950s Mondrian-inspired paintings with floating lines and color blocks to his anti-narrative films and kinetic sculptures. The title 'Time Out' borrows from a 1953 painting. Breer's Pepsi Cola pavilion at Expo 1970 in Osaka drew criticism but also public enthusiasm and influenced younger artists. His floats are so iconic that the MoMA in New York sells them as gadgets.
