Robert Berlind Memorial and Posthumous Exhibition at Lennon, Weinberg, Inc.
Robert Berlind passed away on December 17, 2015, after a long illness. A memorial service was recently held where friends and family spoke of his generosity and determination. His artistic career spanned fifty years, producing landscape-based works that concealed complex perceptual investigations beneath deceptively simple surfaces. His wife, artist Mary Lucier, captured his intense concentration in her 1998 video Summer, or Grief. Berlind's technique involved superimposing spatial layers, creating flattened perspectives reminiscent of microscope slides or Mylar sheets. He mastered subtle color, particularly greens, influenced by peers like Harriet Shorr, Robert Kushner, Alex Katz, and Lois Dodd. His painting Studio Roof #4, 2015, will be featured in a solo exhibition opening January 9, 2016, at Lennon, Weinberg, Inc., located at 514 West 25th Street in New York. The exhibition, titled Robert Berlind: Kyoto/Cochecton, runs with an opening reception from 5-7 pm. Berlind also worked as a distinguished professor and art critic. In 2005, he had an exhibition at Tibor de Nagy gallery. His monumental work Passage (2007) measures 5 x 17 feet and depicts a shimmering grid of branches and leaves. He recorded a message about dying and gratitude to be played at his memorial, reflecting his grace. He is remembered for his curiosity and support of others' work.
