Rob Pruitt completes 3,000 Obama portraits, one for each day of presidency

artist · 2026-05-05

Rob Pruitt has created 3,000 paintings, one for each day of Barack Obama's presidency, in a series titled 'The Obama Paintings'. The works, each based on a photograph taken on the corresponding day, depict the former president in candid moments such as playing golf or walking in the garden, rather than official events. Pruitt began the project at the start of Obama's term and is finishing it as Obama prepares to leave office on January 20, 2017. The series was exhibited in progress at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit and will be offered for sale to an institution once completed. Pruitt, a successful mid-career artist, previously had a solo show at Massimo De Carlo's temporary London space in 2009.
