Rita Nitsch on Organizing Hermann Nitsch's Final Six-Day Feast After His Death

festival-fair · 2026-04-26

Rita Nitsch, who was the partner of the renowned Austrian actionist Hermann Nitsch for almost four decades, is set to host the final Six-Day Feast from June 7 to 9, 2025, at Prinzendorf Castle, following his passing in 2022. The inaugural feast took place in 1998, inspired by Nitsch's extensive 1,700-page score. This last event will incorporate nearly 1,000 pages left behind by Nitsch, with performances for the first two days conducted in July 2022 and the third in 2023. Over 100 musicians will be led by Andrea Cusumano, with direction from Leonhard Kopp and Frank Gassner, alongside around 60 participating artists. Nitsch's work, drawing from Wagner and Greek tragedy, sought catharsis and sparked controversy due to its incorporation of animal carcasses. The Nitsch Foundation will continue to uphold his legacy.
