Rimini First to Bid for Italian Capital of Culture 2026
Rimini has officially launched its candidacy to become the Italian Capital of Culture for 2026, becoming the first city to announce its intention for the title. The municipal administration views the bid as a challenging project aimed at consolidating the city's social and economic growth through culture. To support the process, the city has hired Eventi 3 of Turin to assist with dossier preparation, including selecting a creative director, defining themes, coordinating public and private institutions, and securing funding. By February, an international call will be issued for an artistic director or team to curate the project. The initiative seeks not only a cultural program for 2026 but a long-term strategy to promote Rimini beyond that year. The administration emphasizes involving all cultural institutions, both public (theaters, municipal museums, Fellini Museum, film library, library) and private, as well as the entire community. The title of Italian Capital of Culture was established in 2014 by then-Minister Dario Franceschini, inspired by Matera's designation as European Capital of Culture 2019. Past winners include Cagliari, Lecce, Perugia, Ravenna, Siena (2015), Mantua (2016), Pistoia (2017), Palermo (2018), Parma (2020-2021), Procida (2022), Brescia and Bergamo (2023), and Pesaro (2024). The winning city receives one million euros for project implementation.
