Riken Yamamoto Awarded 2024 Pritzker Architecture Prize for Boundary-Blurring Designs
Riken Yamamoto, a Japanese architect, has been awarded the 2024 Pritzker Architecture Prize in recognition of his extensive career spanning five decades, characterized by transparent and socially responsive designs. Originally from Beijing, China, he relocated to Yokohama, Japan, following World War II. He completed his studies at Nihon University in 1968 and obtained a Master of Arts from Tokyo University of the Arts in 1971. In 1973, he established Riken Yamamoto & Field Shop. His portfolio encompasses a diverse range of buildings throughout Japan, China, South Korea, and Switzerland. The Pritzker jury, chaired by 2016 laureate Alejandro Aravena, commended his "long, coherent, rigorous career." Yamamoto will be honored with USD$100,000 and a bronze medallion during the May 2024 ceremony at the Illinois Institute of Technology.
