Rijksmuseum's 'Remember Me' Explores Renaissance Portraiture

The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam has opened 'Remember Me', a major exhibition examining the history and evolution of portraiture from the Renaissance to the present. The show features masterpieces on loan from institutions including the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, the Kunstmuseum Basel, the National Gallery in London, the Museo del Prado in Madrid, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington. Highlights include Petrus Christus's 'Portrait of a Young Girl' (c. 1470), Maarten van Heemskerck's self-portrait from Cambridge, and Antonello da Messina's 'Portrait of a Man' (1476) from the Museo Civico d'Arte Antica di Palazzo Madama in Turin. The exhibition traces how portraiture flourished in the mid-15th century, reflecting humanist ideals of individual dignity and social status. It contrasts Italian profile portraits with Flemish three-quarter views, which enabled deeper psychological insight. Northern European masters like Dürer and Holbein are noted for their meticulous detail, while Italian artists such as Antonello da Messina and Sofonisba Anguissola are highlighted. The show also explores how portraiture documented fashion, customs, and the role of women, often depicted at marriage. The exhibition is curated by Niccolò Lucarelli.
