Rijksmuseum Hosts First Major Frans Hals Exhibition in Amsterdam

exhibition · 2026-04-26

The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam presents its first major exhibition dedicated to Frans Hals, running until June 9, 2024. This show follows over 30 years since previous Hals exhibitions at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington. Among nearly 50 works on display is Hals's most famous painting, 'The Laughing Cavalier' (1624), returning to the Netherlands for the first time in over 150 years, on loan from the Wallace Collection in London, which decided in 2019 to lend artworks for the first time. The painting exemplifies Hals's unique ability to depict smiling and laughing subjects, a rarity in 17th-century Dutch painting.
