Rijksmuseum Announces Four Major Rembrandt Exhibitions for 2019

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam has unveiled a series of four exhibitions for 2019, marking the 350th anniversary of Rembrandt van Rijn's death. The program, part of the broader 'Year of Rembrandt' celebrated across the Netherlands, begins on February 15 with 'All the Rembrandts,' featuring all 22 paintings, 60 drawings, and over 300 prints from the museum's collection. From July 15 to September 15, 'Long Live Rembrandt' invites amateur and professional artists to submit works inspired by the master. In July, the public can witness the restoration of 'The Night Watch' (1642) inside a glass chamber designed by French architect Jean Michel Wilmotte, with a digital platform allowing global online viewing. Finally, from October 11, 2019, to January 19, 2020, 'Rembrandt – Velázquez' pairs Dutch and Spanish masterpieces, including works by Murillo, Vermeer, Zurbarán, Hals, and Ribera, exploring dialogues between Northern and Southern painting schools.
