Rights Groups Sue Trump Administration Over ICC Sanctions

On Tuesday, a lawsuit was initiated by Human Rights Watch and three other advocacy organizations, contesting the sanctions imposed by the Trump administration on the International Criminal Court (ICC). Filed in the Southern District of New York, the complaint claims that President Donald Trump's executive order, which also targets a UN human rights expert and three Palestinian rights organizations, represents a "blatantly illegal attack on international justice." The plaintiffs—Human Rights Watch, the American Friends Service Committee, the Centre for Constitutional Rights, and the Open Society Institute—argue that these sanctions infringe upon their First and Fifth Amendment rights and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. Andrew Loewenstein of Foley Hoag LLP, the lead attorney for the plaintiffs, emphasized the extensive damage inflicted by the executive order. This lawsuit reflects a broader resistance against the administration's attempts to weaken international law. The State Department has yet to respond to requests for comment. The ICC, located in The Hague, has been probing Israeli actions in Palestine, which triggered the sanctions. This case underscores the existing tensions between the US and global legal frameworks.
