Riga's Art Nouveau and Cultural Heritage: A Travel Guide to Latvia's Capital
Riga, Latvia's capital, is a cultural crossroads shaped by Teutonic, Swedish, Polish-Lithuanian, and Russian influences. Founded in 1201 by Bishop Albrecht von Buxthoeven during the Livonian Crusade, the city joined the Hanseatic League and became a key trade port. The Old Town features the House of the Black Heads (rebuilt in 1999), St. Peter's Cathedral (built 1209, now Lutheran), and the Powder Tower. Art Nouveau flourishes in the late 19th-century expansion, with three styles: German severe lines, European floral (by architect Mikhail Eisenstein), and Latvian National Romanticism (1906–1912). The Peitav Synagogue (1905) survived WWII and Soviet era. The Latvian National Museum of Art, the first purpose-built museum in the Baltics, houses Latvian art from the 18th to 20th centuries. Current exhibitions include 'Refraction of Light' (until July 23, 2023) on Imants Vecozols (b. 1933), a figurative painter who subtly resisted Soviet dictatorship, and 'A Matter of Time' (until August 6, 2023) by Vineta Kaulača (b. 1971), exploring perception and time through neutral spaces.
