Richard Timperio's 2011 solo exhibition at Art 101 showcases vibrant acrylic paintings

exhibition · 2026-04-22

Richard Timperio presented new paintings at Art 101 in Williamsburg from September 8 to October 9, 2011. The exhibition marked a departure from his earlier gestural abstract style, featuring light, airy surfaces with vivid colors like reds, blues, and greens. Timperio, known for his role at Sideshow Gallery, studied painting at the Cleveland Institute of Art in the 1960s. His work evolved from pop-inspired imagery to rodeo scenes after a 1970s sojourn in New Mexico, later shifting toward purely visual panoramas. In this show, he employed a figure-ground relationship technique, starting with fluid, stained-looking undercoats of acrylic on unsized canvas, achieved by applying color over a wet undercoat of white house paint mixed with a dispersant. Over these grounds, he superimposed smaller images with a brush, including circles, discs, squiggles, and lean rectangles. Notable pieces include Turquoise Wheel, with curvilinear elements, and Jazz Blocker and Sunliner, which use vertical and horizontal rectangles respectively to dictate composition. The exhibition included works on paper and canvas, with the smaller paper pieces showing more development due to longer working time. Overall, the show conveyed a cheerful, ebullient tone, reflecting Timperio's jovial personality.
