Richard Serra's 'Transmitter' at Gagosian Le Bourget
Richard Serra's monumental sculpture 'Transmitter' (2020) is on view at Gagosian's Le Bourget space, extended through October 29, 2022. The work, made of stainless steel, measures 4 meters high, 17.7 meters wide, and 18.2 meters long, requiring multiple semi-trailers for transport and significant welding for installation. It consists of two parallel ribbons that create a narrow corridor and two breathing-room-like chambers. The sculpture was created specifically for the Le Bourget gallery and appears perfectly integrated. Critic Richard Leydier compares it to Serra's Guggenheim Bilbao piece, noting that while the Bilbao work is larger, the Le Bourget piece is even more beautiful due to spatial constraints. The Corten steel's oxidation is described as almost pictorial, echoing Serra's works on paper displayed in adjacent rooms. The sculpture evokes sensations of imbalance and labyrinthine space, with Leydier drawing parallels to Daedalus and Icarus and the nearby airport's airplanes.
