Richard Serra's 40 Unseen Drawings at Cardi Gallery Milan
Cardi Gallery in Milan presents 40 Balls, a series of forty previously unseen drawings by Richard Serra, all created in 2021 specifically for this exhibition conceived by the artist himself. The works, made from a compressed mixture of oil paint, wax, and burnt pigments, are described as scabrous, charred residues forming imperfect black circles on white paper. Each drawing occupies an eccentric position on the sheet, but when viewed in sequence along the gallery's perimeter, they create an undulating, rhythmic movement akin to film frames. The exhibition highlights a paradox: each piece possesses extreme materiality and tactile roughness, while the overall installation achieves a floating, musical lightness. At 83, Serra demonstrates a vital lesson in minimalism. The show is curated by Alberto Mugnaini, an art historian and artist who co-founded the New York design lab 'New York...' and holds a PhD from the University of Pisa.
