Richard Serra installs monumental sculpture at Grand Palais for Monumenta 2008
Richard Serra was selected for the 2008 edition of Monumenta, a program inviting major artists to install a work under the glass roof of the Grand Palais in Paris. Following Anselm Kiefer in 2007 and preceding Christian Boltanski in 2009, Serra created a site-specific piece titled Promenade, a romantic invitation to wander through the vast luminous space, though governed by the artist's strict logic. In an interview with Robert Storr, Serra explained the project's conception in relation to his earlier works and the challenges of structuring, balancing, and calculating volumes, intervals, and proportions. Concurrently, his sculpture Clara-Clara was reinstalled in the Jardin des Tuileries, and an exhibition of his prints was held at Galerie Lelong in Paris from May 15 to July 5. Monumenta ran from May 7 to June 15, 2008.
