Richard Saltoun Gallery Opens Second Location in Rome

institutional · 2026-04-27

London-based Richard Saltoun Gallery will open a second location in Rome in March 2022, delayed from February due to COVID-19. The gallery, founded in 2012 and based in Mayfair, will occupy a space on Via Margutta, a historic street once home to artists like Cy Twombly and Salvatore Scarpitta. Caterina Antonaci, formerly of Galleria Nazionale di Arte Moderna e Contemporanea and Magazzino gallery, will direct the Rome space. Chiara Marino, previously at the London gallery, will serve as Gallery Manager. The location was chosen by Richard Saltoun with curator Paola Ugolini, who organized four group shows at the London gallery between 2015 and 2019. The inaugural exhibition will be a solo show of Bertina Lopes (1924–2012), a Mozambican painter who lived in Rome from 1964 until her death. Lopes was featured in the 56th Venice Biennale curated by Okwui Enwezor as a leading artist in the Mozambican Pavilion. The gallery's program focuses on feminist, conceptual, and performance art from the 1960s onward, with an emphasis on marginalized and underrepresented artists. Rome was chosen due to the gallery's long relationship with Italy, including participation in Artissima in Turin, and representation of Italian artists like Silvia Giambrone. The space aims to honor Rome's avant-garde legacy, including movements like Forma 1 and Gruppo Origine, while presenting younger artists and expanding beyond a Western-centric art history.
