Richard Prince faces third copyright lawsuit, Gagosian also named

Richard Prince is facing a third copyright infringement lawsuit, this time from Los Angeles makeup artist Ashley Salazar, who uses the Instagram handle Mynxii White. Prince allegedly used a two-year-old selfie Salazar posted on Instagram without permission. The lawsuit also names Gagosian Gallery in New York. This comes after Prince recently settled disputes with photographer Dennis Morris over an image of Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious, and with photographer Donald Graham over a photo of a Rastafarian exhibited at Gagosian. Prince's legal history includes a 2008 case with French photographer Patrick Cariou, which Prince won, and controversy over his New Portraits series featuring Instagram images from Selena Mooney (Missy Suicide), shown at Frieze Art Fair. The new lawsuit follows Prince's split from Gagosian Gallery this summer after nearly 11 years of collaboration; the reasons for the split are unknown but may relate to tensions from Prince's appropriation practices.
