Richard Pare's Soviet Modernist Architecture Photos at Graham Foundation
From October 11, 2012, to February 16, 2013, 'The Lost Vanguard: Soviet Modernist Architecture, 1922-32' was showcased at the Graham Foundation in Chicago. This exhibition displayed an extensive collection of nearly 15,000 photographs by British photographer Richard Pare, documenting modernist architecture across Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, and Azerbaijan over a span of 15 years beginning in 1992. Hosted in the Madlener House, the exhibition was initially created by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The first floor concentrated on Moscow, while the second floor featured Leningrad, smaller cities in Russia, Ukraine, and Azerbaijan, highlighting architects such as Konstantin Melnikov, Moisei Ginzburg, and Erich Mendelsohn. A related book, 'Lost Vanguard: Russian Modernist Architecture, 1922-1932' (The Monacelli Press, 2007), provided further visuals. The review was authored by Katherine Hill Reischl, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Chicago.
