Richard Mosse's 'Displaced' at MAST Bologna: Migration, Conflict, Climate

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The MAST Foundation in Bologna presents 'Displaced,' a major retrospective of Irish photographer Richard Mosse featuring 77 images, two large video installations ('The Enclave' from 2013 and 'Incoming' from 2017), and two video works including 'Quick' (2010) which traces the genesis of his research. Curated by Urs Stahel, the exhibition explores migration, conflict, and climate change as drivers of social, economic, and political transformation. Mosse's work avoids iconic event coverage, instead focusing on context through a highly colored, neo-pictorialist language. Notable is 'Tristes Tropiques' (2020), shot in the Brazilian Amazon, depicting a landscape devastated by human greed. For his Congo work, Mosse used Kodak Aerochrome, a discontinued military reconnaissance infrared film, in the North Kivu region where coltan (source of tantalum for smartphones) is mined. The exhibition includes a book with a black paper insert reproducing Mosse's digital C-prints on metallic paper.
