Richard Long's Largest Solo Show Since Tate Retrospective Opens at Houghton Hall

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Houghton Hall, the 18th-century Palladian country house in Norfolk, England, built for former British Prime Minister Sir Robert Walpole and now home to the Marquess of Cholmondeley, David George Philip Cholmondeley, and his wife Rose Hanbury, has transformed into a venue for contemporary art. Since commissioning James Turrell in 2000, the Marquess has invited artists such as Anya Gallaccio, Zhan Wang, Stephen Cox, Jeppe Hein, Rachel Whiteread, and Phillip King to install sculptures in the park. The latest exhibition, 'Earth Sky: Richard Long at Houghton,' opened on April 30, 2017, and is the artist's largest solo show since his 2009 Tate retrospective. Long, who created the permanent installation 'Full Moon Circle' in 2003, presents works including 'Wilderness Dreaming' (2017), a spiral of white slate fragments; 'North South East West' (2017), a circle of sharp stones; and 'White Deer Circle' (2016), a circular temple of 16 tree roots.
