Richard Healy and Jack Newling's Sculptural Dialogue in Rowing's Reverse Repeat Programme

Rowing's Reverse Repeat programme launched with a two-part exhibition featuring sculptors Richard Healy and Jack Newling, exploring object status and symbolic potential. In the first stage, Newling's Attachment occupied the main gallery while Healy's Prone Positions was in a cabinet room. For part two, Healy expanded into the main space with Arrangement, Arrangement II, and Arrangement III, reusing elements from his earlier Out of Office—a folded beach towel, travel vaporiser, and bottled water on a three-tiered unit—alongside new items like a scented candle, floral arrangement, and a QuickTime movie. Four lithographs titled Aaaah, Aaaaaah, Aaaaaaaah, and Aaaaaaaaaah, made from travel brochure pages with stamped logos, critique kitsch. Newling's works, including painted plaster versions of ketchup dispensers and shampoo bottles in Like-Minded, Emotionally Distant and Kept in Mind, along with abstract amber pint glasses in Cheerful, blur object and image boundaries. The review, published in October 2013, notes Healy's larger pieces feel diffuse compared to the cohesive irony of Out of Office, while Newling's objects gain effectiveness when spaced apart rather than bunched together.
