Richard Hamilton's Duchamp Correspondence and Exegesis Published
A new volume from JRP/Ringier, edited by Corinne Diserens and Gesine Tsin, collects letters, interviews, and texts between Richard Hamilton and Marcel Duchamp, alongside Hamilton's writings on Duchamp's work. The book highlights Hamilton's role as Duchamp's "grand déchiffreur" for translating and typographically transposing the Green Box notes into English, a process that began after Hamilton discovered a copy in 1948. Their correspondence, marked by Duchamp's characteristic delays, evolved into a close friendship, with Duchamp praising Hamilton's "monster of veracity" in rendering the Green Box. Hamilton also organized Duchamp's 1966 retrospective at the Tate Gallery, for which he created a replica of The Large Glass, now in the Tate collection. The volume includes Hamilton's descriptive texts on The Large Glass, though it notably omits engagement with key scholars like Jean Suquet. The publication adds to recent releases of Duchamp's correspondence with Maria Martins (edited by Michael R. Taylor) and Katherine S. Dreier (edited by Paul B. Franklin).
